Here we have the four most commonly used image file types of the same image: BMP, JPEG, PSD, PNG.
You can clearly see by the white backgrounds in the BMP and JPEG images that they are not suitable for Flash. Even if there is no background on the image, it always be imported with one. The two best options left are PSD and PNG. They do not come with backgrounds once imported, but how do you now which one to use?
In this image, it can be clearly seen that the PNG file is a lot smaller in size compared to the PSD file. When importing files, it is best to have the smallest possible files size because if they're too big, your program could crash, and that's a waste of time. So when importing assets to Flash, the best file type to use is PNG.
